Golda Mabovitch was born in a Jew ghetto within Russia. She later changed her last name to Meir. In 1903 her father realized that his family was no longer safe in Russia. He sold his tools to but himself a passage to America. After two years he sent for his family. The trip was very harsh. When they travel through Europe they had to have fake passports and also bribe a police officer.
Once they arrived at the U.S Golda loved it. She like the skyscrapers, trolleys, ice cream, and soft drinks. She also did very good at school. She had a lot of friends and easily learned English. She also raised a fundraiser for students who cant afford textbooks. The fundraiser was a success. Two years later she graduated from eight grade first in her class.
Golda's parents were very proud of her achievements but they thought that woman's primary goal was to marry. She disagreed, she wanted to be a teacher. She worked various jobs and enrolled at a high school. Her mother tried to force her to quit school and look for a husband but she did not. She wrote a letter to her older sister Sheyna who had moved to Demver. Golda convinced her sister to let her live with her. In 1912 Golda went to Denver. Her parents were very hurt and dissapointed. She also attended and listened about Zionism. She was also proposed by Morris Meyerson, but Golda wasnt ready to marry at the age of 16. She told him one day she will be his wife.
One day Golda received a letter from her father saying her mother was very ill. She respected their request even she had to leave Morris. The couple wrote each other and Morris made plans to move to Milaukee. She attended to Milwaukee Teacher's Training College. She also started to get involved with the Zionist Group.
WWI started and the violence against Jews were getting worse. Golda and her family helped raise money for the war victims. In 1917 news arrived from Europe that a deadly riot has been carried out against Jews. Golda, determined to make the Jewish homeland left school, and move to Chicago. Morris joined her later on. In November 1917 England issued the Balfour Declaration which meant support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It was a very good news for the Zionists.
